This paper first discusses the key issues that inhibit Voice over IP (VOIP) to be popular with the users. Then I discuss the protocols and standards that exist today and are required to make the VOIP products from different vendors to interoperate. The main focus is on H.323 and SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), which are the signaling protocols. But when we talk about the TCP/IP model, it was designed and developed by Department of Defense (DoD) in 1960s and is based on standard protocols. It stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. The TCP/IP model is a concise version of the OSI model. It contains four layers, unlike seven layers in the OSI model. One of the greatest challenges for VoIP is ensuring high speech quality over an IP network. IP was designed primarily for asynchronous data traffic, which can tolerate delay. VoIP, however, is very sensitive to delay and packet loss. She then reviews the protocols that make VoIP possible, including TCP/IP, Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP) and the H.323 family. She provides a review of media gateways and network operations, including quality of service and DNS, that are critical to the success of VoIP.
