Sep 04, 2016 · At 6,327 feet, Celo Knob is the 13th highest mountain in the eastern United States--39 feet higher than New Hamp shire's Mount Washington and 327 feet shorter than Mount Mitchell. Celo was the first peak climbed by Dr. Elisha Mitchell during his 1835 exploration of the Black Mountains that led him to declare these mountains as the highest in Celo Knob, built by Windsor Homes, is located in Kernersville, NC, with easy access to Winston-Salem, High Point, and Greensboro. The community offers large, private homesites in a country setting with Davidson County schools, no city taxes, and no HOA dues. Celo Knob & Gibbs Mountain via Woody Ridge Trail, NC (7-4-18) The Woody Ridge Trail is widely lauded as one of the steepest, if not THE steepest, foot path in the Southern Appalachians. Over its 2.7-mile length the trail climbs around 3,000-feet giving it an astounding rate of ascent of 1,111 feet/mile (in comparison my hike out of the Grand As with Celo Knob, Gibbs Mountain is one of the more isolated and remote peaks in the Black Mountains. Access is by very long climbs over extremely rough terrain, with some trails requiring all four limbs to climb. There are few switchbacks along these trails, which utilise a head-on technique in tackling the ridges and summits. From Celo Knob, the trail descends about 3500 feet to Bowlens Creek. A car shuttle or drop off is recommended and parking is available at both the Mt Mitchell and Bowlens Creek trailheads. Very limited parking at Bowlens creek if any at all. Celo Knob from Mt. Mitchell Parking Lot and return: This is a 14-mile hike which is very strenuous because of the steep ups-and-downs, but in good weather one of the most spectacular vistas in the region. It includes all 6 peaks north of Mt. Mitchell and can be incorporated with Mt. Mitchell to total 7 peaks.
